How Oliver Topped Our Score (a loose adaptation of Don McQueen's Recital)

A peaceful spot is Strath Creek, where lies the Hume & Hovell Ground
Until the morn' when Ol' Whitefriars Cricketers came around
In the valley of a thousand hills where the climate is erratic and the consequences are
A struggle with the decision to bat or bowl in that day's spirited war

The opposition were running through their drills
As if on foot patrol through the Basra hills
But the folk are now pondering as they ne'er pondered before
For we've played UK Infantry at cricket and Oliver topped our score

After winning the toss in the prized brown blazer, Captain Laz shouted "we'll bowl"
Now folk wonder if that was the started us digging a hole
The Infantry opening batsman took centre with wry grin
While Oliver stepped briskly to the crease and sent a "swinger" in

Runs were hard to come by but the batsmen hung in there
Crowe took the ball and found two edges, but soon we'd drop a pair
A third dropped off Oliver and OWC were not traveling so fair
Pete shouted "Catch it!" He's out as sure as eggs
When Watson took the catch it gave Ol' Friars legs

Then Ol' Friars went in to bat, for glory and renown
But, like the grass before the scythe, our wickets tumbled down
James, Gezza & Sal, three wickets down for fourteen
Our captain heaved a sigh, as he sent Firey in on nigh

Now Firey let loose and nearly hit the ball into town
But it didn't last before his innings got chopped down
Then more wickets kept falling till Coghlan reached the track
And with Oliver stroking leather they made a forty-two run crack
That's when a military hand took a blinder of a catch,
To take out Oliver and see OWC lose the match

We drank to the Infantry and we cheered them three times three
And when Infantry got its breath they also joined the spree
And the critics say they never saw a cricket match like that
When the last wicket stand nearly broke the record at Hume & Hovell
But the British folk are jubilating whilst nearby kangaroos began to grovel
For we played Infantry CC who played the best they'd ever played before,
But not even Oliver could save our score!
