Match ReportMOCCC v OWC6th Dec 2007
|
| Warm conditions greeted the
players for the much anticipated 20/20 twighlight match @
Marcellin. The Friars were coming of a win against Doncaster and
were confident of making it back to back wins v the Eagles. The Friars were dealt an early blow when star all-rounder and Captain Flynn was ruled out prior to the match due after a car accident earlier in the week. Although unable to play, Mike, generously agreed to umpire the game. The Friars were sent in on the synthetic wicket with the Eagles keen to strike some early blows with their pace attack of Day and Gill. Friars openers Cimoli and Kolb started brightly and set the tone for the high scoring first session of play. The dismissal of Kolb, brought A.Graham to the crease to join Cimoli. Both batsman swung the willow to good effect, but the Eagles did themselves no favours with inaccurate bowling which resulted a high extras count. Upon the retirement of both batsman, Height, Bucello and Larratt fell in quick succession. Despite the quick wickets, Friars batsman Gleeson and Monks were undaunted and proceeded to smash the ball to all parts of the small ground with the Friars finishing their first 10 overs in the strong position of 4/117. The Eagles knew they had a game on their hands and begun about setting a target cautiously with Kost and Rando facing some good bowling from Tim Graham and Steve Richitelli. Both batsman retired and when first drop batsman Murray fell cheaply the Friars held the upper hand. Eagles duo, Gill and Rush, started to get into the 20/20 spirit with some lusty hitting which got the scoreboard ticking over. Friars Captain Larratt saw the danger and threw the bowl back to T.Graham, in an attempt to get some wickets. Graham responded by bowling M.Dinneen cheaply and following it up with the wicket of French. Kolb was brought into the attack and despite the lack of wickets was the pick of the bowlers, proving to be difficult to hit. The Eagles needed a strong finish if they were to set the Friars a task in the their final 10 overs and Vear and J. Dinneen responded, hitting some prodigious boundaries in the last few overs. The Eagles finished their 20 overs on 193, which meant the Friars needed just 76 in their last 10 overs. With six wickets in hand the Friars seemed well placed. Monks and Ciardulli commenced the final ten overs solidly, but disaster stuck when Monks, T.Graham and Rischetelli fell in quick succession with paceman Gill proving difficult to play with the white ball. Cimoli was next in but was caught plum LBW to Murray and umpire Flynn had no alternative but to raise the finger and send him back to the pavilion. With only 2 wickets left, A.Graham fell and this brought Gleeson back to the crease with Ciardulli. A tense final few overs pursued with the Eagles striving for the last wicket and the Friars batsman clawing their way to toward the victory target. With 2 overs to spare and just 3 runs required for victory, young Eagles bowler Rush claimed the final wicket with a skied catch taking by Neylon at mid on. Congratulations to both sides for providing a high scoring, entertaining and high quality affair. Hopefully this game can become a regular part of the fixture for both teams !
